How to use it

  1. Pick your pool's shape.
  2. Measure length, width, and average depth in feet (average the shallow and deep ends for depth).
  3. Use the gallon estimate in every other calculator on the site.

How pool volume is calculated

Volume in gallons is the surface area × average depth × 7.48 (gallons per cubic foot). For a rectangle that's length × width × depth; round and oval pools use the radius. Average depth means exactly that — add the shallow-end and deep-end depths and divide by two.

Frequently asked questions

How many gallons is my pool?
For a rectangular pool: length × width × average depth (feet) × 7.48. A 32×16 pool averaging 5 ft deep is about 19,000 gallons. Enter your numbers for an estimate.
What's average depth?
The average of your shallow end and deep end. A pool that's 3 ft shallow and 7 ft deep averages 5 ft.
Why does volume matter so much?
Every chemical dose scales with gallons — get the volume wrong and every dose is wrong. It's the first number to nail down.
